When I grow up I want to Be Aunti Fern

(Aunti Fern, the youngest sister of the hubbys gram, at our Anniversary party in August)

Aunti Fern will be 98 this spring. She is a delightful woman who is still the life of every party. Recently she was complaining in her usual lighthearted way the woes of growing old. This poem was her wonderful lament:

I feel like the old women in the shoe
I have so many wrinkles I don't know what to do,

so I guess I'll paint them with pencil, powder and paint
but that makes me what I ain't

so, I guess I'll stay like I am
cause at my age, who gives a damn!

All right for Auntie Fern!! It is one of my goals in life to become a feisty old lady!! I remember a friend freaking out about her 25th bday (she was younger than me btw) saying..."i'm a quarter of a century old..." And I told her, that's ok...when you're 90, this won't seem like anything!! So good for Auntie Fern....she's a role model!!

I can't imagine lasting until I'm 98, she looks great! And fairly active too, at least she's sitting in a normal chair without help,(having worked in nursing homes as an electrician) I can tell you that's an accomplishement in itself at that age.

What a riot! She's hysterical! If I ever attend one of your family gatherings, make sure to seat me next to her ;) And - WOW - she looks fabulous for 98!

And Pamela, I think your on your way to being Auntie Fern - you're a riot too!

can I grow up to be Auntie Fern too? WOW I love her spirit!!

I dont think I want to live to 98 though... My Grandmother is 91 this year and she has only 2 or 3 friends left alive. It has got to be terrible to see everyone you ever care for die before you. I am just not that strong! I know you can fight for the other side too and say that you get to see all the new babies and kids growing up etc... but idk ..

great post I got here btw from a comment you left for Pam about a bucket of cats... I thought it was clever! lol!

cheers! Kate

old people are the best! My great grandmother was 92 when she passed away. Boy the things she could remember. You're very lucky.

Aww, she is so sweet! She reminds me of my grandma.
What a great poem... I love it!

She looks amazing for her age... I couldn't believe it when you said her age. I hope I'm around and looking that great in my 90's.
