Who are these people

I was reading over at Mercy Maid's about something she overheard at the post office recently. It reminded me of something I heard not long before the Postage costs were raised.

Our Post Office is an old but elegant building with Marble Floors and old brass boxes. There is a large table set in the outer entrance where you can weigh your packages and large envelopes. An express Stamp machine is there if you have the correct change and you don't want to stand in line.

I was sorting my business mail into my canvas bag when I heard a young woman's voice.

"The price of stamps is going up two cents, " she announced to her walking companion, "and I have 100 wedding invitations that need to go out next month."

A middle age Mexican man was putting stamps on his envelopes on the opposite side of the table and he looked up and we exchanged a nod of shared frustration about the rising cost. Our friendly glance became lifted eyebrows and suppressed laughter when we heard her next statement.

"That's why I'm going to buy all my stamps today - before the price goes up."

Ha ha ha ha ha! What an idiot! With that many stamps to buy she should wait until they go on sale!

I have a feeling that a lot of guests will not be receiving their invitations!

I bought MY stamps last year! Wise, me. Glad you survived the crazy driving antics of the other drivers ... and thanks for the info on hummingbirdfeeders. I had no idea the solution needed replacing! How clever of you to know, but how did you figure that out? (Pictures Pamela out in the yard with a straw, taste testing the little bird feeders, alertly watching the tiny, germ infested, birds ... consulting her almanac) hee.

Well....I think it's a great idea!!!! I'd do the same!

I remember hearing that they sell stamps that have no amount on them, and can be used when the price goes up.... now I know that sounds screwy and I can't figure out how that works, but I will have to check into that....

And excuse me for saying this, but that sounded like a blonde joke... LOL

actually.. it's too bad that doesn't work! LOL..

Hehehehe. I'm still using 39-cent stamps and lots and lots of 1-centers.

Heh heh, looks like somebody failed to see the logic! Sounds like something dorky I would do. LOL!

Oh my I thought she was funny but I bet if Willowtree had been there he would have given her his suggestion to wait for a "sale" :)

Considering that she probably spent a fortune on her wedding and the fact that it only would have cost her a whole $2.00 more to buy 100 stamps is pretty funny in itself.
ChrisB said…
Ah but if you did that in the uk you really would save as our stamps only say 1st or 2nd class and not the price!!

Ha, too funny!
(Unless, like my husband, you didn't KNOW the price was going up and was talked into a ROLL of stamps! Uhhh!)

I'm guessing she's from South Carolina.
Anonymous said…
LOL She's going to think about what she said after and feel pretty stupid. Maybe?

Was she blonde?

Was she blonde?

Just kidding. Sadly, I wouldn't have known the price went up if the professor across the hall from me hadn't bought me a book of 2 cent stamps when he went to the post office. I don't mail things much anyway.

Omigosh!! LOL That is too funny...I'm blonde but geez, even I wouldn't think like that!! hehe

They do sell a stamp called the "forever" stamp that is good even if the price is raised. Here's a link.

But if she was buying those love stamps or something - come on people! ;)

OMG! Was it Miss Teen South Carolina??

Anyone who can afford to have 100 guests at a wedding and reception should NOT gripe about the cost of stamps!

Yeah...So what's your point?

I love the kind glance across the table. :)

This wasn't the most recent postage hike. It was when it went to 39 cents. I'd forgotten about the eavesdrop until reading someone else's blog.

unfortunately for her, at that time, there weren't any of the "forever" stamps.

I have some of those in my purse.

Oh wow, I think I know that girl...or far too many LIKE her! But oh I did laugh when reading this! So funny!

LOL, hilarious! But I imagine it created quite a hassle for her and her guests.

I bet she's a college graduate too yet ;)

Oh that is just sad.......
Did someone tell her that she would need to get 2 cent stamps to send them???

Bahahaha!

Yeah, that'll be me in 10 years...

sounds like something I would say - and not get it.

Chris B pipped me to my comment. I too would have said that you could do that in hte UK. In fact here, if you buy a stamp saying first class it will last, as first class forever...

It changed a few years back. We used to have the proce on them too.

Not sure I'd be too worried about 2 dollars though with the cost of a wedding. Mind you if most guests don't turn up, it will be cheaper!

I did laugh though!

now that made me laugh.
