Turkey Lurkey

Carmi has asked for a picture of something different for this week's Thematic Photograph.

Their unprecedented appearance is why I chased these three wild turkeys down the street with my camera. I think they were considering their escape options when I cornered them in our neighbors yard.

In the over thirty years I've lived on this street I  have never before been visited by a wild turkey .

My neighbor Bill has lived here more than 50 years and claims it was his first sighting, too!

Later that afternoon when they were enjoying the spilled sunflower seeds under my bird feeder,  the neighbor's dog surprised them.  All three flew high into the neighbors old maple tree and were still perched there when night fell.

I wondered if they found refuge in town during hunting season and decided it was so nice that they would stick around.

If you saw something odd this week, post it and link your blog at Written Inc.   Or, just go check out what other bloggers share

We have seen wild turkeys on our property several times, but they are usually found further down the blacktop road in one of the fields that has some crop turkeys enjoy more. Brome doesn't attract them, but next year our field will be planted in either corn or soybeans, so I expect we'll see more turkey and also more deer. How cool that these turkeys visited your suburban neighborhood! Even cooler that you were able to corner them and snap their photo.

The bottled variety of "Wild Turkey" could explain this sighting????

Great picture!

I think the turkeys are either making a "comeback" or getting more used to housing developments and less shy around humans as their wildness space gets "developed" (i.e., destroyed).

I saw at least 12 this year and about 7-8 last year and none for years before that.

I hope you enjoyed your sighting! They are odd looking birds - but graceful in their own way.

I have never seen a wild turkey. That was worth the chase (o:
Now if you can just get a picture of a reindeer in your neighborhood.

This is the second post I read today where it involves wild turkeys being seen where they're not usually seen! Another blogger had one in her son's yard...the day before Thanksgiving no less. That turkey must have had a death wish! lol We see them in the farm fields around here but never in anyone's yards. xoxo

I think the wild turkeys were hiding from all the hunters out there.

Pretty funny - I think they were out celebrating that they survived Thanksgiving. :)
They love all the bird feeders in town! We have quite a few in this area.. I like to take photos of them too..they can run pretty fast! I hope you are feeling better.
I had to laugh at your comment on my blog " We were seperated at birth." It is nice to know I am not alone!! :)

We get a lot of wild bush turkeys here in the bush but I have to admit I have not seen any around the houses.
We had turkeys in the yard at the farm, but then, we lived in the middle of the back pasture!!

We've had lots of critters pass through our yard, where we live now, but haven't seen a turkey.

I didn't even know that wild turkies exist, how stupid, lol ! Hopefully they will escape Christmas dinner hunters ! I hate hunters ! I wished I had a "Licence to kill", lol !

Cool! They don't even come that close to my house, and we're out in the sticks.

We had a deer in Iowa, well two different visits, in town. Weird. My husband swears he saw a fox here in town either this year, and we have a resident owl, apparently as well.

We don't have wild turkeys in our area so the first time I saw some was when we went to Geology camp at Frank Slide down in Southern Alberta. I have heard since there have been sightings in our area. I have not been so fortunate to be one to sight them although with some people there may be confusion as to what constitutes a wild turkey ;-) .
