Christmas Songs that Induce Insanity

Cynagirl wants to know which Christmas songs drive me bonkers for this Fun Monday.

The fact that I heard Christmas music playing in Sears before Halloween gave me reason to get that crazy feeling entirely too early this year.

But...for a particular song, I allowed myself to go back to a childhood memory.
My mom had an LP with all the Stars of her day singing the season favorites.  She would play that album quite often during the holiday season.  Oh How I hated to hear Silent Night moaned out with despair by Marlene Dietrich. 

I couldn't find that particular recording available on the web.  But, lucky you!  I found her rendition of  Little Drummer Boy.  It's equally endearing.

Oh, dear... that's depressing. For a non-seasonal dose of Dietrich that's also a real downer, look up her version of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone". Not a particularly cheerful song anyway, but when she gets hold of it...

That's horrible. Now, I do like to sing "O Tannenbaum" in German, but I think my voice sounds better than that. This one drives dh nutty as he says it sounds like you're worshipping the dang Christmas tree. He's not big on Christmas and the pagan origins of all the traditions and the craziness of the general population during this time of year. The one that irritates me most is probably "Christmas Shoes". I don't know if there's a more depressing Christmas song than that and the middle school choir was supposed to sing it at their concert next week. I kept telling Na that she needed to tell her music teacher what a horrible choice her mom thought it was, but she was too chicken to do it. Fortunately, the music teacher got mad at some of the kids in the choir who were goofing off while practicing the song and decided to take it out of the line up as a *punishment*. Oh dang! How disappointing! I was seriously going to bring earplugs for that song or sit in an aisle seat where I could escape to the bathroom.

At the risk of being "thrown out" of the blogging club, I'd have to say my least favorite songs growing up were sung by Elvis.

It was mostly a case of massive overexposure though. After about 50,000 playings I think just about anyone would "grow old".

I have never heard this song with Marlene Dietrich ! I didn't even know that the song had been translated into German ! it really sounds horrible, probably even worse when you understand the words ! She really hasn't the voice for Christmas songs !

That was bad. Jenni said Christmas Shoes is sad and I would agree, but there is the one where the cat and mouse are trapped outside in a storm and the cat dies covering the mouse...that one is very sad too. I get irritated by most Christmas songs, likely the same reason as Jenni's husband. Starting them at Halloween just makes it that much worse.

An Old Cold Spot

My brother Mike emailed me this photo last night.  He said this was a goodbye salute that he snapped today in his garage where this old freezer has been chugging away since 1988.  That was the year our mama decided she was tired of bending over and digging through it.  Besides, she no longer needed the capacity and hadn't for several years. Mike and my sister-in-law  spent the next 25 years "digging" through this old freezer.  My sis-in-law was very good at keeping it and the cupboards stocked.  The two of them kept promising each other that "It is going to die soon, so we will just keep it until that day." Twenty-five years may seem like a very long life for a freezer.  It is MUCH older than that. Apparitions in my Garden

Karmyn is the host of Fun Monday this week with a subject that is near and dear to her heart. Not to mention her knees and fingers. But I mentioned them anyway. The subject? --- What's Growing In Your Garden. As soon as I signed up I grabbed my camera and headed out the back door. Alyssum, lady's mantle, gaillardia, Jupiter beard, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember is blooming in this photo. We didn't put as many annuals in this year so I miss all the yellows and reds that we often enjoy. But, something else showed up in that surprised me. Can it be that my yard is haunted? Bird Voyeur

The sweet little digital camera that the hubby purchased (after I dropped our old one) has encouraged me to do a little more walking. Last week I took it with me when I walked up the "creek" path, which doubles for joggers and bikers as well. I've seen beavers, mink, deer, birds, birds, birds, and once the tail end of a bear run running away through the brush. Of course, without a camera. Now I carry it often. This time I was watching the Belted King Fisher performing an acrobatic display and chattering at the ducks and geese in his fishing territory. I was zooming in on him in a tree across the water when I spotted what I thought was a huge wasp or hornet nest very high in the tree. (Thanks to Susan for bringing up bee's today.) The heavy binoculars were at home, so I continued to try to see it through my camera. Then, a weird movement caught my eye.
